Context: YOU!

Refresher Brief

Explain who you are, your values, your identity, your purpose...in terms of who you are as you, a person not who you are in terms of graphic design.

This is telling, not selling.

Task one: Know who you are

Task two: Communicate it

You should use this opportunity to showcase you.

Once you know what you want to say, impress us with how you say, show and present it. Use your creative skills to communicate what you want to say; from poetry to a poster any medium is appropriate.

Your story is of course a work in progress, it’s still being written. Focus on your journey to date, a suggestion perhaps of what’s to come.

To begin, I started to think about me as an individual, not a designer.

PPP presentation

PPP presentation notes

Who am I?
I have found that I have progressed a lot more during second year
I have gained a greater knowledge and feel slightly more confident
I still have a lot to learn

Branding
I feel my branding reflects me as a designer as it shows a more hand rendered aesthetic
I don’t have a specific styling to my work, therefore I wanted to create a branding identity that is versatile
Which can be used across a wide range of my work

Influences
The style of work I produced this year has progressed from the first year
The style has been influenced by a wider range of artists and designers
I have been more experimental with varied processes

Strengths & Weaknesses
I have noticed my strengths and weaknesses throughout the year
I feel that I have stayed committed to the course and been more open to experimenting
However my time management needs to improve

I have enjoyed
I have enjoyed exploring a wide range of experimental processes, ranging from screen print to book binding
The collaborative brief was also a good experience, I am interested in working with my partner again next year

Improvements
I have found that my time management skills when working on multiple briefs need to improve aswell as blogging

Own work
I have applied some of the skills I have learnt to my own work, I enjoyed completing 2 branding and identity briefs
The secret 7 brief was one of the smaller briefs for responsive that I enjoyed
The collaborative brief was also a good experience, as it allowed me try new processes during the developmental stage when working with a printed textiles student

Next year
Next year I am aiming to develop my design aesthetic
Continue experimenting with a wide range of processes
And continue to develop my personal branding

PPP promotion pack

Jessica self branding

I feel that I have captured the essence of my design within my promotion pack, the hand rendered logo works across my business cards, portfolio cards, cv, and even the letter head. The embossing tag on the outer of the parcel and also on the belly band of the postcards gives the package a nice hand rendered element, and makes the package more personal to who ever receives it. I am pleased with the outcome, my intentions were to create a parcel which incorporates my own style within, and also showing my love for hand rendered stylised work, I feel that I have managed to create something that fits my brief and shows me as a designer.

Development

Final thumbnails

This shows the layout for the content of my pack (supporting material shown in sketch book in submission folder) I have settled on these clear designs, allowing negative space to be part of my design.

Chosen selection of colours to use, the only colour that will be used will be variations of 'jessica' this will help keep printing costs cheap. The other colours will be on the portfolio postcards, displaying some of my work.

Using in deign to create my creative CV.

I have taken interest in parchment craft over this year, so I wanted to play with the idea of hand embossing my logo to apply to my promotional pack, I think that this will create a very personal element that the client/receiver can notice, allowing my work to not just be 2 dimensional.

I will use one for the belly band on my postcards, and another on the the outer packaging.

Self branding

For my self branding I want to incorporate my hand writing into my logo, as I feel this reflects my style the best as I tend to create more hand rendered based work before digital.

I don’t have a specific styling to my work, therefore I wanted to create a branding identity that is versatile and that can be used across most of my work.

I started off by trying some hand rendered type, as I wanted my branding to derive from my own style of hand writing.

I quite liked the way the ink appeared on paper but it needs refining a lot so i I will manipulate on illustrator.

This gives the type a much cleaner finish, however it has not turned out how I had planned, as it does not look professional enough to use as my branding. I need to go back to my sketch book and try and create another alternative, but still keeping my handwriting as the main aesthetic.
I started by just writing my name normally, in different variations. My handwriting

This is more suitable, I think keeping it clean and simple will work best for my brand identity as it needs to be applied to a wide range of my work.

Knowing that I want to create a logo derived from my original hand writing I want to try image tracing the original lettering.

This is not clean enough for my logo, so I intend to try and clean it up using the pen tool.

Instead, I will use the brush tool to try and recreate my handwriting using a digital tablet. This shows a few experiments, playing around with the tablet until I can get a correct composition of the lettering.

Final logo
I am happy with how this lettering has turned out, it imitates my own handwriting, while also having a clean aesthetic. This is the one that I will use for my brand identity.
