Self Evaluation

BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN
LEVEL
04
 Module Code
OUGD402

 Module Title
PPP1

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
In this module I have learned to self asses myself more. I find it useful reflecting back on work at the beginning of the year up until this point and seeing the development. Some of my work I am not best pleased with, but I feel that I have learned from certain mistakes enabling me to develop my practice more successfully. I have learned new areas of design process, which has informed my work.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development?
Throughout the course I have learned new production menthols, and also new software. I had never used indesign before but now I feel I am able to develop these skills further and hopefully progress in this area of design. I was also able to develop my skills on illustrator therefore I have put this to use for studio brief 2 'its up to you.'

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how well have/will you capitalise on these?
PPP has enabled me to pick out what I do and don't like within my work, I can now analyse effectively and decide what to capitalise on in the future.

4. What weakness can you identify your work and how will you address these in the future?
I regret not contacting any studios or designers properly. Throughout first year I have produced work that I don't feel is good enough to show to the people in the industry. For second year onwards I will make sure my designs are developed to the best of my ability so I can gain the confidence to try and contact people in the industry.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect go gain?
  • consistent analysis of current work
  • take more photographs
  • be more aware of graphic design
  • compare my own work more
  • become more confident

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

Promotion pack initial ideas

Initial mind maps:

Logo ideas:
Wanted to keep very simple so that embroidery would suit any style, therefore I have chosen to stick to my initials 'JW' and keep the font as a serif. I have hand rendered these, and I will hand render the final then turn this into a vector on illustrator to give it a clean finish. I wanted to hand render so it was unlike any font, I want to try a light weight.

PPP presentation

Notes for presentation:

1. Graphic Design

I chose graphic design after I did this at A-Level and my foundation course, therefore I wanted to develop my skills further in this area.
After coming to the open day, and learning more about the course and college, I knew that I would like to study graphic design in leeds college of art.

2. Inspiration

I like looking at artist and designers that use embroidery within their work.
These are examples from one of the artists I like, the use of textile and illustration works well together.
When developing some of my work, I have taken inspiration from this style of work and created my own stitched pieces.

3. Challenges

I am not always confident about my own work, so at first I found crits and presentations difficult.
I feel that I have developed my skills while on this course, especially with learning new processes such as book binding.

4. Editorial and Publishing

Before joining the course I had never used InDesign and design for publication, and wasn’t able to produce successful layouts.
I want to try and develop these skills further as this is an area I have shown interest in towards the end of this year

5. Crits

Group crits with the class have helped improve my confidence, and the feedback given I have found beneficial when developing my designs.

6. Experimentation

On this course I have been able to experiment with different processes and techniques.
I had already screen printed in the past, but the two colour screen print was something I needed to practice.

7. Staying Positive

In the past when I found something difficult I used to leave it until last minute, I have learned not to do this and to try and stay positive throughout each brief

8. Aspirations for the future

In the future I would like to spend more time visiting more exhibitions and galleries outside of college.
I found the recent trip to the print specialist very useful, it was interesting to see how things are produced.

Its up to you

When developing ideas for this brief, it is a reflection on ourselves. The response needs to inform our PPP presentations, therefore I will summarise the key points identified in my presentation.

I started to research existing self promotion packs.

Its up to you (Studio Brief)

STUDIO BRIEF 2 - It's Up To You
Brief
Design, develop and produce an information pack that effectivey communicates or promotes you as an individual, designer and learner. You will need to reflect on the first year of the programe and aim to communicate what you have learned, the skills you have developed and how you see yourself applying them in the future. You should  also aim to communicate the context of your interest by referencing specific designers, studios, principles and audiences where necessary.
You should use this brief as an opportunity to explore, develop and demonstrate content, processes and areas of design that interets you at this point in time and may indicate your emerging creative concerns in Graphic Design.
Background / Considerations
Your resolution to this brief should be a representation of what YOU see as important as an individual designer and learner in light of what you have learned on the programme to date. You will need to consider the following:
Who are you now? What have you learned? What skills do you have? What do you know? What do you believe? In answering these questions remember that your design practice is informaed by a broad range of social, ethical, creative and professional concerns. What are they.
What information do you need to include? and what formats can you use to effectively communicate or promote this information? What tone of voice best reflects you, your practice anf your ambitions?
What experiences have shaped your opinions and views both in and outside of te programme?
What are your creative concerns, opinions and beliefs and how do you communicate these practically, conceptually a practically? Wht has informed these decsions and who are the contextual references that reflect your individual focus?
What is 'Brand You'? Your visual identity will help tie the information together. What fonts, formats, colours and productio methods will help communicate and enhance your content.

OUGD401 COP Module self evaluation

Overall I have found the context of practice module interesting yet challenging. Throughout the year I have gained significant knowledge needed to complete this module.
During the seminars I have learned things that are extremely beneficial. I have never learned things about semiotics before and I know feel that I have a significant amount of knowledge about this topic. Connotations and denotations are another important branch from semiotics, and I feel that after the sessions learning about this I am now able to successfully conduct a semiotic analysis, which is something I haven’t done before. I feel more confident when completing critical analysis’ and I think writing the essay enabled me to develop these analysing skills. However this was the most challenging part of the module, as I have never completed a critical analysis sufficient enough for this standard. I would like to capitalise on these skills, and develop this practice further. This will help improve my understanding greater and hopefully allow me to progress these skills.
The second part of this module ‘theory into practice’ I found very interesting. It allowed me to develop my ideas into something physical, and interpret the key elements of my critical analysis as a visual response. I enjoyed this part of the module, as I was able to use the new production techniques I have learned while on this course to produce a physical representation of my critical analysis. These include the use of InDesign and also saddle stitch bookbinding. I have combined these skills with something I came across when researching existing publications. I am pleased with the overall final publication. I feel like I have produced a good representation of my essay contained in an aesthetically pleasing book of quotes. My small publication displays famous graphic design quotations, which back up my main argument within the essay that fine art should not be assigned more value than more popular forms of visual communication.

Pressision print

With class we went to the pressision print factory in Leeds. I really enjoyed this visit as we got to see how everything works when being printed.
